Modest Mouse
Nirvana (debatable but I threw this in here anyway)
RHCP (Red Hot Chilli Peppers)
Rise Against
The Black Keys (becoming more mainstream though)
The Offspring (my favorite band of all time)
Also Chevelle is a great metal band. They are mainstream but have a different sound then most metal bands
