People tend to debate on this whether it is safe or not. Many people think it is completely safe including myself, and other will say it completely voids your warranty. That is not the case. Once you've jailbroken your device, you have the ability to restore back to stock firmware. I will say this though, there are very slim chances that if your device completely stops working, Apple will not cover it. If you ever notice any sort of problems with your iPhone such as the home button no longer works, restore and then take it to an Apple store. Chances are they will cover it considering they cannot find any traces of the device being jailbroken.

I would wait if I were you because I have also recently got an iphone 4 and jailbreaking it tethered is pretty much a waste of time, you should just wait for the untethered version of 5.1 to come out.
