It's an operating system mate, like windows, but nothing like it. it uses a different architecture, it's open source, which means it's free, and you can do anything you want to it, if you need any more info mate, let me know

As it is open sourse... However not all versions are free some versions of linex cost money to get. However they come with many features and are very effective fast and look nice.
And as it is free anyone can eddit the code and make there own changes to it.
hope that helped

I have recommended Ubuntu to quite a few people, as with everything it has pros and cons. If you wish to see what its like you can do so without any harm to your system. download the latest ISO from there website and burn it to CD, when it boots you can use it right from the disc to see what its like.
Most standard tasks can be completed without issues on Ubuntu and if using a 64bit version applications open like they were minimized. Also Ubuntu tends to be less prone to killing itself after update.
When you have more advanced hardware you can sometimes come into compatibility issues. I personally have this issue so run a virtual machine with USB support so that I can control these devices from a windows based system and then let ubuntu take over from there.
Another thing is Linux cant (Natively) run windows software, it is possible to get some windows software to run with a bit of trial and error.
All in all its down to what you want. The free software in the Ubuntu Software Libery is just as powerful as its equal windows software in most instances (from what i have found) and sometimes more powerful. The reverse can also be true.
