So can i upgrade from ipod 4gen 5.0.1 to 5.1 but will i be able to keep all cydia items and apps

If you update you will lose everything.
But if you use APTbackup on cydia I believe it saves all your cydia packages

hey you will just have to do everything again which isnt that hard. but the 5.1 update is just for the iphone 4s and such

You won't keep it, you will have to re-jailbreak, and redownload all of your cydia tweaks, also, at this time there is only 5.1 tethered, so i'd suggest staying on 5.0.1.
