If I buy the iPhone 2g or 3g, would i still have to get the mandatory data plan like todays iphones?

Yes you will still have to get the data plan, unless you plan on just using it for texting and calling

You wouldnt have a data plan but couldnt you still use your call and text features?

Accually, my cousin gave me his 3gs and i used it for about 1 year now and I haven't gotten charged since the day i got it.
