i tryed this before for a freind and it says same becouse you need to play it on the console you installed it to so it waint work for you on your xbox but lets say like you said he installed on his xbox but on yur hardrive so if he put it n his it will work becouse it was that xbox that you installed it on and not yours

am not sure if it would work only thing is try it and see but if if dont then you will need to do what your freind did on his to yours e.g take xbox apart and hotswap ect
