Hi. So I want to be a programmer as a career i want to programme/Implement Xbox 360 games and i was wondering what I should be able to do/know in order to achieve this. If i do not reach retail programming i would be fine helping to develop Arcade or even Indie games. Now you are going to ask where i live blah blah blah etc etc.

I live in Scotland Im 17 and in my last year of secondary school. I live in Lanark. I plan on going to City of Glasgow College to do a HNC Computing then progressing onto a HND in Software Development. I currently am doing Int2 Computing and am programming in Visual Basic atm. I can guess that I am going to need to learn how to programme in Java if i going to get anywhere but my teacher has offered to teach me Java. How does this sound in terms of am i going in the right direction or is there something i could do any replies would be appreciated thanks.

I don't think you need to know C, but just C++. Though since C is the superset of C++ I guess you should know what as well. Anyway, if you want a serious programming career I would stay away from Indie Game Dev and go for actual games. Indie games are almost like hobbies a lot of times. Though if you want to do it you have to learn C#.

As I've stated in this section before, in my opinion the best language to learn if you plan on starting a career in software development is Java. You can do almost anything with it.

If your interested in developing games in particular, you must remember games can be written in a variety of languages, Minecraft for instance is made in Java, the Eve online Universe is constructed from Python so i believe, and major platform games like COD or Battlefield are developed in C#, C++.

It's best to learn and deal with one language in particular to become used to it's framework, then move on to other languages.

This. Start with Java and work your way into it. If you need to learn another language for the job, take some time and learn it. I'm learning Java now to hopefully get me started for my computing class next year.

Generally speaking, you should stay away from Java when working on games. inb4ButMCisMadeinJava.

Why? What's bad about games being programmed in Java?

I would recommend getting higher computing or advanced higher first.
