I once updated a JTAGable xbox to dash 9199 by mistake haha. My dash was pre-nxe and FreeBoot recommended I update the dash to 7371 before JTAGing, so I downloaded the 7371 update, put it on a USB drive, and let it run. But it stopped halfway through the update and said it needed more storage space for xbox live stuff before continuing. So thinking this wasn't an issue I took the hard drive off of my other xbox, attached it to my JTAG, and continued with the update.
Well after the update completed I went to system info to verify it updated to 7371 and it was on 9199! Goodbye JTAG! Apparently the xbox 360 stores a backup copy of the most recent system update on its hard drive so when you go to use your hard drive on an xbox with an older dash it automatically updates it. I learned my lesson the hard way. But luckily it's never happened to me again haha
