You need to do challenges in singleplayer, you only get the characters for deathmatch though.

If you go to multiplayer and go to your avatars go to the deathmatch section and click it, scroll down and you'll see the characters and how to unlock them.

I already tried that

It's something about score, I had a look the other day and it told me that you need to get something along the lines of so much score in a mission.

Okay I just had a look again, for some you need to be Legend, Legend is like prestige from COD. So if you wanted to get "Tropical Max" you need to reach the first Legend level, if you wanted "Bodyguard Max" you would need to be Legend level two (like 2nd Prestige on COD and so on.) Some characters also require you to complete other things for example "Booze and Pills Max" you need to beat "New York Minute Hardcore" all you need to do is go to Arsenal > Avatars > Deathmatch and flick through the characters, the challenges can be found at the top of the menu.
