mrgrowlHD wrote I apologize if this has already been discussed, but good God you DO NOT NEED 16gb FOR GAMING!! I don't know where people get this misconception about ram and it's function. More or less RAM is for multi-tasking, and the more RAM you have the quicker it is.. to multitask, not game. Having more RAM isn't going to make your gameplay 3x better. Now if you want to use this pc for programs like sony vegas, photoshop, after effects, the more RAM is need to do that quickly. But still, 16gb is not needed. 12gb of RAM is plenty of RAM for high end gaming. Even 8gb would be more than enough. But since I assume you're going to be rendering/editing gameplays, and browsing the internet and such, 12gb is going to be perfect. Not trying to tell you what to buy, i'm just trying to save you money.
I actually don't think I specified this but I multi task quite a lot on my computer now. A lot of tabs are open, 2 browser windows, U torrent and sometimes I use PS and C4D at the same time. I just want to be on the safe side as I don't know what else I will use my PC for once I buy it.

12gb's of RAM = triple channel.
1155 boards = dual channel = decreased performance.
Sorry. I know you're trying to get the point across that I'm wasting money. But what features won't I use. I've only started looking at building a custom PC since last Wednesday. Also I want 7.1 audio so if I get the MSI Z77 G43 does that mean I have to get 7.1?
I know I am probably acting like a idiot but in actual fact I am an idiot when it comes to this.
Thanks for your help so far though.
Dual BIOS, extra and unneeded PCI slots, insane power and mosfets around the CPU socket, richer I/O panel, etc. It only makes sense to put more money towards PC components that will give you a better result, I.E SSD for general browsing and editing - high end GPU for gaming..etc. They both have full analog audio ports and THX audio so it's the same thing.

I assumed that since it's a gaming pc you might have a lot of things open at once. Programs that use a lot of processes will for sure slow things down a bit, and RAM already takes a beating just by playing a game and having programs open. But, you honestly will need 12 maximum. I know you're trying to play it safe, but you really shouldn't be spending money on things you don't need. Most pre-built gaming computers come with 6gb stock, so imagine double that. You will be speeding through the internet and programs lighting fast at that rate. Hell, my computer only has 4gb of RAM and you can see me on cod4 and tf2 (not high end gaming, so don't laugh at me). So all in all, 12gb is more than safe for RAM. Now if you find a really good deal on 4 more gb of RAM, and you have extra money just laying around (I know I don't), be more than happy to buy it. Or if you get your pc with 12gb, and realize that ram isn't doing it for you, just buy 4gb more. It's not like ram is hard to add to a computer. Just consider my 12gb option, look at the pricing, that's all i'm asking.

Of course it all depends on what MOBO he is getting and what set RAM it is. I was talking in general. Actually I was more talking financial wise, trying to save the most money.

If he was trying to save the most money, he would get 4gb's of RAM and a 2500k...so he threw that right out of the window. All 1155 socket MOBO's only support dual channel, yes triple channel will physically run, but at decreased performance.
