it depends on what you are going to be using your laptop for.. if your just using it for writing documents and browsing the internet i would recommend buying a fairly inexpensive laptop.. but if your looking into getting into PC gaming the cheapest way into it is building your own desktop. i hope i helped

Want something insanely thin and small with decent battery life and mediocre processing power? Asus UX21A or UX31A. They also have 1080p IPS panels on some models.

Want something with incredible battery life, build quality, screen quality, upgrade-ablity, and solid processing power? Lenovo Thinkpad X230. If you ask me, this is the best laptop on the market all-around.

Want something with beastly processing power for heavy-duty applications like heavy rendering and encoding with good screen quality, build quality and battery life? Thinkpad W530. You more than likely do not need what this computer has to offer.

Want to game? Build a desktop, I can help. If you need portability, get a refurbished X220 for cheap to go along with it.
