Try Checking Out Some Visual Tutorials E.g. Youtube First Then When You Feel Comfortable With Some Then Try Reading Up Some.

You Can Try Either Way Round.

Try Starting On A Small Project First. Don't Jump Straight Into It

Youtube will not teach him how to code in java. He needs to understand the basics first which is done through two methods reading and practising coding small projects. He will not be able to start game development until has has a huge understanding on java.

If you live in Florida, there is a free online course hosted by FLVS. But, if you don't live in FL, you can pay for it.

The description of the course from the FLVS website:
Computer Programming 1 is a two-semester course that enables students to learn two modern programming languages: Python and Java. The course teaches programming using real-world, practical examples. Students learn Python by controlling the motion and sensory capabilities of a robot. They learn Java by manipulating graphics, images, and audio. Programming is easier than most students think, and students show what they know by choosing projects that are of interest to them. Major colleges and universities are now using this approach to teach introductory computer programming, so students in this course learn the skills necessary to tackle advanced programming.

what kind of game? What platform? If it is by chsnce for Xbox, Java is not the language, it is C#. But for PC Java is excellent. You should also learn some HTML and embed in your code.

You should start with Lua, its very easy and it gets you familiar with Loops and Function. But if you already have experience go with Java a very common platform!

I feel like controlling a robot and doing stuff with graphics isn't a good place to start, even though it says it's an introductory course. I'd start with making simple console applications, reading files, etc.
