Hey guys, I have an Acer 5740 running Windows 7.

It was working absolutely fine one day, I switched it off, and then switched it back on later that day and it stopped working. I hadn't downloaded anything dodgy or done anything that would have caused this to happen, I have no idea what did.

So I tried to boot it up and it just gets stuck at 'Starting Windows' everytime. So I tried booting safe mode, but that gets stuck too at 'Disk.sys'. So I tried booting Repair Computer but that also gets stuck at 'Starting Windows'.

I thought I would need to use my recovery CD, so I put that in, booted it up but that also freezes at 'Starting Windows 7'.

I have no idea what the problem is, I managed to run Kubuntu off an old CD I had and managed to back up all my important data, but I don't know what to do next.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and if someone gives me a working solution I will send them $5 through PayPal

Just did a quick search and came across this question which seems similar to yours:

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

As you can see, they fixed theirs by disabling the on-board firewire in the BIOS. Maybe it could be the same issue for you?

Also, some other websites people suggested to try and run "Last Known Good Configuration". If not, try boot safe mode with command prompt and enter:

"c:\windows\system32\restore\rstui.exe"

Which will launch the system restore application so you could try restore it.

Thanks for your reply, I have also read that and do not know how to disable my on-board firewire. I have also already tried booting with command prompt and having the same problem. Gave you some +Rep for replying

Well I presume your laptop has the Pheonix BIOS, so to disable the firewire (presuming you have it) you would need to boot into the BIOS by pressing "Del" (default Pheonix access key) or it will be something similar like F8.

Once in, go to Integrated Peripherals and then in there, there should be an option for your Firewire port. (Will say "Onboard 1394 Device")
