Well the 'Monster Spawners' i think they only Spawn Monsters and they only spawn there.

At the moment the only animal or mob that is running crazy in the cage is a pig, when the game is updated I think they will add more detail to it so that for each spawner that spawns a certain something will have that certain mob/animal running crazy in the cage.

Im not too sure about the other question.

Their Monster Spawners, so when your playing on a difficultly then they'll something different. But in this version (1.6.6) they all have a pig rotating in the cage, in a future update they'll show what they really spawn.

Why do they all have pigs inside?
There is a bug which appears that there is a pig inside of every spawner, when infact there should actually be the different mob types miniaturized. So a zombie spawner, should have a zombie. But due to the bug, it shows up as a pig.

Are there different spawners and types?

Yes. Every mob has it's own spawner. But the only ones you are able to find are: Zombie, Spider, and Skeleton. Everything else is all accessible through really hard HxD Hex editing and modding.


and another question, Do monsters ONLY spawn at spawners? or can they spawn anywhere?

Monsters can spawn anywhere that is dark. If there are torches, a mob is less likely to spawn. (they're afraid of the light! lol)

But the reason you must've asked is because of the spawners. Just because you see a creeper on the surface, doesn't mean it came from a spawner. Actually, creepers spawners aren't even in the worlds, so it's pretty straight-forward.

in this version of minecraft , 1.6.6 , you can only get spider, zombie and skeleton spawners yet they all display the pig in the cage making it tough to identify them.

mobs can spawn anywhere but each one spawns in different light levels, spiders spawn in pitch black rooms whereas creepers can spawn outside during the day.

that sucks i made this amazing trap, but it doesnt work for spider spawners. haha ;(
