Jonathon Harwood, eight, was rushed to hospital after the Staffordshire Bull Terrier turned on him.

He suffered a broken facial bone and nerve damage and will be scarred for life.

Mum Lisa Patterson, 32, said: One minute we were stroking the dog and the next it pounced and went for Jonathons face. He could have been killed.

Lisa, who dragged the dog off, added: Hes terrified of coming home. Cops destroyed the animal in Marsden, Tyne and Wear. It belonged to a neighbour of Lisas who got it from a rescue centre last month.

Tuesdays attack happened two days after Keiron Guess, two, was mauled by the same breed in Swindon, Wilts. He was put in an induced coma but is now breathing by himself.

This is why you don't rescue fully grown staffies, you don't know there background and what happened to them. You get them as a pup and raise it well, this wouldn't happen. They blame the dog but really... it all comes down to the owner or previous owners. She/He was only doing what she knows and been taught.

I don't like it when stories like this happen, not only because someone was hurt, but because it makes the specific breed of dog seem dangerous.Fact is, I/or my mum owns a staffy called tyson and he is the softest dog I know, my little sister (8 years old) plays with him in the garden all the time, he even plays with my cat:D. It's not the breed of dog, its the owner.

I feel sorry for the child and I hope he gets through it fine and safe.
On the other hand people are right it wasn't the dogs fault like someone said if they rescue it from a "shelter" there is no way you know who previously owned the dog and what their intentions were for the dog.
The Staffordahire is a VERY strong dog many people also use them for illegal dog fights.
Maybe the poor dog was fine with the boy petting him, but the child or someone near could maybe of moved or fidgeted and it might of scared the dog and attack the boy.

The media is going to target this breed and exploit them into some kind of "Devil Dog" how this title shows it.
Nothing is wrong with the dog but people are going to criticize it and make it seem as if all Staffordshires are like that.
You shouldnt rescue full grown dogs without knowing their past.

I love dogs and I believe it's never a BAD DOG BUT A BAD OWNER!

I don't blame the dog, I blame it's current owner or past owner/experiences if it has had one.

I always hate reading stories like this. It gives those who blame the breed more power on their beliefs. It's never the dog, it's the owner. If someone tied me up outside and treated me poorly I'd be mean too.
