Is there a quicker way to mine down Stone stairs?

Stand in the middle of two blocks, then dig straight down while your still in the middle( so you won't fall if you hit lava, plus bring some ladders), then once you hit bed rock go 3blocks up. Then start digging a 4 high room and you will get the best matterials, then add rooms 4 cubes high throughout the ladder system so you can get cobble stone and coal and maybe some other stuff.

He said best way to get rid of stone stairs. NOt how to mine stone.
