I've been looking for a new computer since my laptop burns out every charger it has. I am currently using my dad's laptop. But I'm looking to buy a new one. I was thinking of going back to the desktop pc. As it lasts much longer and could be much faster in certain areas. Any reccomendations on which one I should buy? Also, which brand and type?

You've got the right idea, desktop pc's are better IMO unless you need something specialized for mobility. Like r00t_b33r said, whats your budget? $300-500 will get you something pretty nice. Also desktops offer the ability to upgrade whereas laptops don't let you do much but change out hard drives and install better ram.
Head over to the Custom PC sticky and they'll sort you out once you have a budget.

Don't get a prebuilt if you're going to go for gaming on a PC.

FTFY. Even for something that's not for gaming I'd avoid prebuilts like the plague.

$250 is probably the set limit at this point.

250... Won't get you much. For a desktop we're talking a Celeron CPU and no discrete graphics. For a laptop, you might be able to land a Lenovo Thinkpad X120E for that price.
