Both your JTAG and your Retail MUST be connected to the same router ( router is that magic voodoo box in your house that performs acts of wizardry to give you internet access )

You have 2 ways of connecting them to your router:

1: Via wireless adaptor
2: Via Ethanet cable

So just to clarify, if you are going to connect them wireless (not using the ethanet cable) then you will need a wireless adaptor for BOTH consoles. Same aplies if you choose to connect via ethanet then you will need a cable for BOTH consoles.

This will not put your JTAG online, and yes an xbox 360 wireless adaptor.

I hope this has cleared things up for you
