This makes no sense. Why would the kid keep the 1 when he has to repay his parents anyway. This isn't remotely confusing at all because the whole makes no sense. He spent the 100, it became 3, he gave 1 to his mom and one to his dad so he has 1 left over and for whatever reason he keeps it to himself.
Also, you wouldn't add the dollar to how much he still owes you would subtract it making the total a 97. Simply put, there's no missing dollar the equation was made to confuse you.

Actually its cause you added in the wrong order. Do it like this, "You bought a shirt that is 97 pounds, 3 dollars left over. One given to your mum, one to your dad, and one you keep. Okay so instead you just add it as 2 pounds (the 2 pounds you gave to your mum and dad) and the on you kept. So 97 + 2pounds from mum and dad + 1 pound you kept = 100.
