The energy our body uses is called ATP (adionsine tri-phosphate). the body usually produces 38ATP from 1 glucose molecule through respiration which takes place in three stages: 1) Glycolysis: produces 2 pyruvate molecules
2) Kreb's Cycle: converts pyruvate into citric acid (thats why it's called the citric acid cycle)
3) The electron transport chain (oxidative phosphorilation)

If you don't take In glucose, your body will make glucose out of fats or protines.

Energy comes in 2 forms:

Carbohydates
Sugars

Carbohydrates is long term energy which is found in pasta, bread etc...
Sugar is short term and gives a rapid burst of energy, Found in sweets etc...

The energy is absorbed in the stomach and then goes into your blood stream and is transported to your muscles so that they can continue to work efficiently without getting tired depending on which type of energy you have.

That is pretty much the simple side summed up.
