Intrepid wrote The old person that had it probly tried updating it with an old lt+ firmware on it. If you try doing that it gives you that error.
Your screwed.
Surely there must be a way to fix it

put 14699 on a usb but I didn't disconnect the drive. It just did what it normally does and went straight to that screen. Ill format the usb stick tomorrow and put the dash back on it then try updating without the drive connected. Is there not a certain dash that I would need to update to or does it not matter as long as it is above the one that it is on now?
Thanks for the help

im sure if you clear the hdd and check xbl connection it will prompt a update, if its older you need to do it this way so it can install 2 updates instead of jumping up to the latest one.

Your system is not accepting your DVD drive firmware, either your DVD has been modified before or your drive got curropted when updating. if your system has been modified before then you must restore your drive back to stock and reupdate. if your system has never been modded before then you will need a new drive.

you need a hdd or other storage device to install the update this should be common sense.
if its 8995 or lower you need a genuine hdd it wont read off brand devices before 9199.
