Actually it was called Football first, Then some brits started to name it soccer to not get it confused with Rugby. It never stuck but Americans caught on to it.

I dont get why people like soccer/football, it is very slow paced, and sometimes no one scores the entire game!!!! Hockey is the best sport ever invented!
