Why the **** do I keep getting punched in the face when I start to drown, thus keeping me from surfacing for air?

Well, if you have removed any blocks from the water or nearby, it causes a small downward current that slows your surfacing speed. And the "punches" are actually you drowning and losing health. Try to swim towards untouched water blocks to surface.
