Police opened fire on dog after it reacted angrily when officers approached homeless owner who appeared to be having a seizure. Star, the pit bull shot in the head by police in the East Village Monday, is now in critical but stable condition, animal control officials said. Animal Care & Control was caring for the wounded pit bull, but an agency spokesman refused Tuesday to further describe Stars condition. Star and its owner, a homeless man named Lech Stankiewicz, were outside a KFC at 14th St. and Second Ave. about 4:15 p.m Monday when police arrived for what appeared to be a medical situation involving Stankiewicz.
While some witnesses said that the officer was only defending himself, others accused the officer of using excessive force. One onlooker said that officers had sprayed mace or pepper spray at the pit bull before the shot rang out. Aida Feliciano, who lives nearby, said that the man was kicked by officers, prompting the dog to become defensive of its owner. She said: 'Instead of calling the ambulance, they started kicking him.' Another witness said: 'I talked to the cop afterwards. He was very shaken up. He's a dog lover and it ruined his week, if not his year. And he did what he had to do to protect himself.' The homeless man was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The officer was also hospitalised for ringing in his ears.

I really want to **** murder that police officer now, that was completely unnecessary and that dog could have been easily restrained and couldn't harm a fly.

This sickens me. As if he couldnt of just tackle to try and stop the dog with other means of force. Instead hes uses a gun.

I found nothing wrong with shooting the dog. If I was a police officer and a random dog was acting vicious and charged me I would have done the same thing. On the other hand I wouldn't have let the dog sit there a suffer. I would have put him out of his misery. Then, I would have tended to the homeless man hanging halfway out in the street having a seizure.People are really to sensitive nowadays crying over a dog that was shot trying to attack a officer of the law trying to assist a homeless person. You eat meat don't you? You should see some of the stuff they do in slaughter houses.
Edit: People hate police officers until, they really need them.

I gotta agree with Soviet. I mean I have two points of view. It was an emergency to get to the man and the dog was preveting them which could of cost the man his life. So the shooting (or even tackling) of the dog was called for. However once the dog was shot the police just did nothing. So what could of been passed as a viable action to save a mans life was wasted as they just left the man there and shot the dog for nothing. I do think people over-reacted a lot though...

Vox wrote Makes me hate american's even more
>a few american's are bad
>gotta hate all of them
Nice logic.
On topic, how hard was it to jump to the left or right to dodge the dog? Also, the fact that they let it sit there and suffer instead of putting it out of its misery is sickening.
