Match Review

Coming to Anfield to play Liverpool in the Premier League may not be as hard of a task as it once was when Liverpool where on top of Europe and one of the 'Top 4' teams. But nonetheless, both teams were hoping for 3 points. Of course with reigning Premier League champions, Man City narrowly escaping a defeat last weekend with a 3-2 win over new boys South Hampton, Roberto Mancini's 'Blue Army' were looking to shake off this narrow escape by coming out of Anfield with 3 points. But Liverpool were not going to let the champions just come in and walk out with 3 points, Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers had to prove that his success at Swansea was no lucky spell, after an awful 3-0 defeat to West Brom Albion in the opening game of the season. Both teams had plenty to play for.

Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers wanted to end his club's poor goal scoring record last season by deploying a more attacking and dynamic squad, with youngster Sterling, making his LFC debut at the age of 17 alongside new boy Borini and the main man, Luis Suarez.
But Man City also made a few changes, 'Mr. Controversy', Mario Balotelli starting up front with Tevez due to an injury Aguero suffered last weekend.

Within minutes of the game starting, Liverpool's Lucas Leiva had to be subbed for Shelvey due to a knock he received in the warm-up, despite recovering from his lengthy injury last season. Early on, Man City showed why they were champions, dominating possession and easily breaking down Liverpool's defence, but failing to make the most out of any chances. Once Liverpool got settled into the game, Brendan Rodger's style of play he developed with Swansea also became part of Liverpool's style of play, with Steven Gerrard and Joe Allen making most of the passes and dominating the midfield.

But it wasn't long until Liverpool had a real scare, Carlos Tevez slipping past the defence and squeezing a shot in from an awkward angle, with a touch from Reina causing it to hit the far post, but with no one to follow in and score, Liverpool cleard the ball quickly.

Man City soon felt Liverpool's attacking presence as Borini just put a volley past the post and new boy, Sterling using his pace and dribbling to cause havoc for Kolo Toure at the the left wing. Captain, Steven Gerrard swerved a beautiful pass into the Man City box which deflected off Kompany awkwardly and nearly went into his own net. Liverpool earned a corner thanks to this deflection, a dangerous ball in allowed Skrtel to power home a header past Joe Hart.

Liverpool were full of confidence because of the goal and were now starting to dominate a broken City. Soon the tables would turn and city would be back in the game thanks to a beautifully lofted pass into the box from Tevez which bounced off Martin Kelly's knee into a great position for Yaya Toure to power home a turned-volley.

Later on in the game, both sides were equal in every way, little chances being created, but keeping as much possession as possible. Liverpool bounced back from a free-kick earned from a handball from Rodwell. Both Luis Suarez and Gerrard stepped up to take it, although Gerrard being the favourite, Suarez proved he was a threat also by swerving a beautiful strike around the wall into the bottom corner away from Joe Hart. Liverpool were back on top.

But unfortunately for Liverpool, they couldn't contain the lead. Goal scorer Skrtel made an awful mistake by making a pass back to Reina, but instead it fell short to Tevez who cooly took it past Reina and slotted home for his 100th Premier League goal.

In the dying minutes both LFC and City tried making substitutions, but neither David Silva, Edin Dzeko or Andy Carroll could make an impact.

Nothing in the review is stolen from another website, all from my own personal opinion of the match.
