I'm thinking about buying 1 before 2 just so I know what this games about. Is it a good game? Is there an online for it?

its a good game, yeah there is online.

It's a very good that you are thinking of getting Borderlands 1 first.
I played that game though many times, and to understand Borderlands 2's story, it's a very good thing to have played, and completed Borderlands 1.
Yes, there's online for it, play with your friends or make new friend, much more fun to play the game with someone else
The multiplier mode, is just like Campaign, but with more players!

They were both very good i would recommend the 2nd 1st it really does not matter

I would suggest just renting out Borderlands 1 to get the understanding of it then buy the full copy of Borderlands 2.

The online is nothing close to or similar to CoD or Battlefield.
infact, it's nothing like that at all.
When you go online with borderlands, you can host your save for your friends to join, or you can join their world and pick up from where they left off in the campaign.
(ive only played Borderlands 1. Haven't played 2, they may have added a matchmaking / rank-up, cod style, multiplayer option)
