My friend told me it's more of a game you would rent so I took it as it being not to good.

I haven't got it yet, I seen a download for it but going to see if my other PC could run it before I try to download it.

It's only 5 Gigs so I'm guessing that it could, anyways, I'll give you my opinion on it once I do play it.

Your friend knows nothing, as for the game, it is the best game I have played all year(better then borderlands 2) but it is pretty short and would require more than one playthrough to see it all.

Is it shorter than Skyrim?

God yes, I say first play was about 12-13 hours(if that), it's not open world like skyrim. There are only 9 missions but various ways to assassinate each target if you choose to replay the missions.

So once you beat the game, what else can you do? Or is there nothing else?

Depends on how much you are into stealth, once you beat it you can try getting ghost runs ect.If you have played things like bioshock, deus ex, hitman and liked them, this is def worth a purchase. There are 2 endings(one for stealth, one for action) so you will need to play through twice atleast.

Dishonored is awesome, and if u call it short then you played it wrong, if you take your time and play it like it supposed to be played itll take u a few days. im 2 days in to it after restarting on mission 6. now im working on beating it on hardest difficulty along with facless, ghost, and clean hand acheivements. This game is awesome.
