like he said he doesn't have the money there for them to take, and most of the people here are correct you can and in fact will have to pay the money back + a fine, i doubt you will get any time for it however, police are reluctant to do this unless they have to. The laws are different in America and im from the UK but i do study law and we quite often reference laws from different countries the US being one because it did have alot of English influence obviously since the Independence you also have alot of other laws in your constitution that we don't have but things like theft etc remain practically identical.

To sum it up what you did was wrong, if you get screwed for it its your fault, and what ever happens to you whether it be a 1000+ fine and the 800 for the laptop, or a years community service you deserve it.
