Well, Tagruato is the parent company that produces the drink Slusho. The secret ingredient for Slusho, which apparently gives people added energy and strength, is mined from the ocean beds through deep sea drilling. Apparently this is also the primary food for the monster, which lived down there. One of three things is believed to be the cause of the attack. The drilling itself woke the monster from a hibernation, a satellite fell into the ocean (Seen in the very last part of the movie) and either woke the monster, or the efforts to find the satellite woke it, or it became angered at the company taking it's food away. The monster destroyed the drilling station closest to NY about a month before it attacked NY.
