There are so many misconceptions about December 21st going around that it would be nice to put everyone's minds at ease.
I'll be finding as many theories about what might happen to cause the world to end and hopefully debunk as many as I can through research. If I find something that I could not type into my own words better it will be copied and pasted into italic and I will try to put sources as well.

Where it all came from.
Decemeber 21st 2012 originated from a combination of the Sumerian, Nibiru collision prediction the Mayan calender as the 'final date'.
Whether it is the final date or the other stone tablets were lost is not certain.
Whether there is more or not is somewhat irrelevant considering what the end of the Calender actually means.
It is just like our calender changes from December to January and we enter a new year, however the Mayan calender changes into a new Baktun. This will be the 13th Baktun.

Mayan belief.
Mayan belief holds that the world will not end, but instead all humans will be upgraded and become more in touch with Earth.

At sunrise on December 21, 2012 for the first time in 26,000 years the Sun rises to conjunct the intersection of the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. This cosmic cross is considered to be an embodiment of the Sacred Tree, The Tree of Life, a tree remembered in all the worlds spiritual traditions. Some observers say this alignment with the heart of the galaxy in 2012 will open a channel for cosmic energy to flow through the earth, cleansing it and all that dwells upon it, raising all to a higher level of vibration.

Planetary Alignment.
There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

The Sumerians and Nibiru/Planet X
Nibiru doesn't exist.
The theory was put forward by a woman who believed she had an extra sense which allowed her to communicate with extraterrestrials.
I believe in the ancient alien theory, I do not believe in super powers.
Nibiru was first 'found' by the ancient Sumerians.
It was first predicted to hit in May 2003, but when it failed, theorists tied the date in with December 21st to make it seem more like these two civilizations were both right and therefore realistic.
Truth is, if Nibiru was going to hit, we'd see it with our own eyes by now.

Polar Shifts.
The scientific community refers to this as True Polar Wander. This is when the surface of the earth undergoes a dramatic shift, or slide, essentially displacing entire continents.
Here are some possible causes of such an event:
1) A giant, high velocity asteroid or comet striking Earth could potentially move the earths crust independent of the mantle. Or, it could even shift the entire Earths axis.
2) A highly magnetic celestial body, moving close enough to Earth, could theoretically reorient the Earths magnetic field, and essentially drag the Earths crust along as it does. However, once the celestial body moves far enough away to no longer affect the Earth, the Earths Magnetic Field would return to normal.

Are any of these two likely for 2012? The answer is no. NASA says that if anything were headed toward Earth, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist.

Meteor Strike.
According to a survey being taken by NASA right now, there are no big meteors heading for Earth.
This large near Earth object survey is being done openly so nothing can be hidden.
Regular astronomers, or anyone with a telescope can get involved.

The Date of the 21st Is Accurate [Leap Years]
The Simple Explanation
The Mayan calender has Baktuns. Like years but longer.
The last time the Mayan calender switched Baktuns was September 1618, nothing happened. The Mayan calender will switch Baktuns again on the 21st.
Leap Years are pretty much irrelevant when finding the date of the 21st.
They are based on the Gregorian calender, which was implemented before the Mayan tablets were found.
IT DOES NOT SAY '21/12/2012 - END' ON THE MAYAN CALENDER
We are given a set of years and time scales which we must then use to calculate the date that they meant in relation to our own calender at this moment from when the tablets were made.
Any calculations done were done with Leap years in mind.

It still gives us the date of the 21st December 2012 no matter what.

The Complicated Explanation (Based on my research)
Obviously;
a.d = After Christs Birth
b.c = Before Christs Birth

Historical reconstructions have shown that Jesus was actually born in either 4 b.c or 6 b.c.
So, since the Gregorian calendar is based on starting with the year of Jesus's birth, then we need an adjustment.
The year formerly known as 2012 would be called either 2015 or 2017, making a 3 or 5 year adjustment, because there is no zero year.
No actual shifting of real time occurs.
It is simply the overlay of a new system being used.
2017 would then be equal to 2012 in the pre-adjusted system. A corrected year of 2017 would correspond to 2012 in the old system.
You would have to count five more years to get to the equivalent 2012 year.
I really hope you're following this because it gets even more complicated.

The date of the 21st comes from the interdisciplinary work of three scholars.
They worked with dates recorded on long count monuments dated between 300 a.d and 900 a.d The correlation of the Mayan calendar and Gregorian calendars is based upon this range, and gives us December 21, 2012 as equivalent to 13.0.0.0.0.
In other words, the data comes from a context after 4 b.c so there is no need to correct for a 3 or 5 year gap of uncounted time.
More to the point, if for example the Long Count date 9.16.4.4.1 was determined to be equal to May 7 755 a.d in the Gregorian calendar, a predictable number of days would have to elapse before 13.0.0.0.0 was reached.
That number of days brings us to December 21, 2012.

Please stop saying it should have ended in the past or future onto 2012 because it is wrong.

I hope everyone is a bit less worried now, even though I know you're all smart enough to ignore the BS posted online about 2012 anyway.
