i was just wondering if i will require a sound card if i get this speaker system. as i was advised to not get one when i asked about my parts.

You don't need one. 2.1s like these have their own amplifiers built in. You'll also want to get something that's not garbage, like this:

Ok thanks for you're help. so what exactly do sound cards do then? and when would they be needed?

I had this question years ago, the answer is NO. you do not need a sound card, in fact, you could use a pair of headphones if you wanted (i wouldn't recommend that ) and it'd still work

a good sound card is for somebody who is going to be using high quality audio devices such as a 7.1 surround system.
