I just learned the hard way that your not ever safe from viruses' on your computer. I'd never used an anti-virus for the past 5 years and never had a problem. I just scanned today because my computer was randomly shutting down... yeah i have 7 trojan horses.
Don't learn the hard way. Use anti virus.

Well, to be fair, if you know what you're doing then you're safe. But if you're 100% clueless to how virus's and malware work, then yeah, it's suggested you use an Anti-Virus.

Well, yes. You're never really "Safe" from viruses no matter what you use. There's always going to be something that you can't detect at first.
I've had to manually remove stuff before because AVS wouldn't pick it up.
I don't like AVG or Norton. I mean, AVG is okay, But it's not the best.
My setup:
Avast
Malwarebytes (Great tool.)
Comodo firewall
Sandboxie. (Not an AV, But it can be used to sandbox browsers and programs so stuff can't harm your PC. It's saved my bum tons of times.)
I've also got SUPERANTISPYWARE but I never use it.
If you've gone FIVE YEARS without any sort of AV, I would really suggest trying a full scan with Malwarebytes. Just incase AVG left anything behind. It's gotta be my favorite virus removal tool. Plus it doesn't run all the time like other AVS, You scan, and then you're done. Just close it. So no unneeded CPU/Memory waste.
You could also try a firewall, Good for blocking unwanted access to your computer or programs.

I always try and keep my firewall off because it creates problems with open ports for gaming.
I download a lot of music off torrents and similar places, I always knew the threat and finally it bit me in the butt.
