I know for a fact that if one of my friends changed I wouldn't have the stomach to 'kill' them.

I think video games and movies have desensitized people to what a zombie apocalypse would actually be like because they try to make comedy out of it.

Maybe not in the way most people think (Biting starts and spread zombies) but if there was a weaponized virus that was put into the water and THEN gets spread by bites. I highly doubt one person getting infected would be that difficult to stop before it spreads beyond control.
