I am not sure what section to put this in but I just found out my parents are getting me my own laptop for Christmas. It is a 15.6" HP with 2 GB RAM and 320 GB hard drive. It has Windows 8. Is this a good starting computer? +rep.

2GB's of RAM is actually pretty low, even for an O/S that is light on resources and if you're just web-browsing. I hover around 2-3gb's of RAM just using Chrome and nothing in the background. At best, it's going to be a simply web-browsing machine since the other specifications would not be up to par with anything more demanding.

if the 320gb hard drive is a HDD that is just gonna be slow cause if they are cheaping out on stuff like that chances are it wont be the only thing + this is down to personal opinion but i say windows 8 sucks

it also looks like a cheap computer so probably uses Intel i3M or Intel Pentium

no one will be able to tell you to much more w/o full spec's but dont be expecting this to run games even less demanding ones like Minecraft. all though Minecraft tends to use a lot of ram

If you are looking to game on it that would be a negative... 2GB of Ram will not be good at all for gaming, I'm guessing this laptop will have integrated graphics as well which will not be very good either... Overall if you are looking to game build a PC, if you are looking to browse this will most likely be fine.
