A U.N. conference that kicked off today in Dubai has sparked fear of Internet censorship in the U.S. -- something U.S. Ambassador Terry Kramer said he is doing everything in his power to prevent.

Nothing regarding the Internet do we want subject to U.N. review and regulation, Kramer told FoxNews.com.

Monday marked the first day of an 11-day conference. Kramer, who leads the U.S. delegation at the conference, said that the first day had gone well and so far delegates are still in the early stage, talking about what should be reviewed when. No specific regulations have been debated yet.

'[Proposals] ... which would essentially tax the Internet we are actively opposing.

- Terry Kramer, U.S. chief envoy to the ITU

But regulations likely to come up soon are far reaching with signification ramifications, ranging from changes to the way web addresses like ".com" are distributed to charging websites for sending information (for example, a company like Google or Amazon could be required to pay cable companies a charge every time someone used their site.)

COULD SHUT DOWN FOR US, UK AND UN NATIONS! THEY SAY THAT THE INTERNET IS IN TOO MUCH USE OF CONSPRICY !

Imagine a world with no internet, what would people do with their time? Odd to think about because I've grown up around it!

The U.N. want to try and charge websites for sending information, that's crazy, Google is the most used search engine in the world and most importantly it's free, if they charge Google to give us the information we are looking for then Google will charge us, not good! Big profits loses if that happens which I highly doubt and hope it won't.

There have been so many attempted censorship acts and so on... only to fail, if you believe any of this, you are sadly mistaking.

The internet will be here until the fall of mankind.

The U.N Can not shut down the internet. It will not happen and if you had half a brain you wouldn't bother posting this or if you were going to it would be in the joker form. Stop posting useless garbage and actually put up some real news? Thanks

I couldn't see them actually shutting down the entire internet, so many companies are based on it - not to mention just everyday browsers who would be in an uproar, they definately have the power to heavy censor it, but I think there would be some serious rioting... I mean, in Canada alone - look at how we act when our hockey teams lose!
