Deceit wrote So what you're implying is that every great, and renown man shouldn't have ever made a mistake in his life? Columbus discovered America for the Europeans, and that's why he's celebrated, not because you believe anything you hear via Wikipedia.
Columbus didn't make a 'mistake'. He was a sadistic killer, no better than Hitler or Stalin.
There was literally no trace of the native Americans left a decade after Columbus first landed.
The Catholic church forced the American Government to make it a national holiday because Columbus was Catholic.
He is in no way a great man for accidentally landing on a continent, planting his flag, enslaving thousands and killing thousands more.

Misanthrope wrote Why does this guy have an American Holiday named after him?
Do people even realize how sadistic this man was?
He was a psychopathic killer.
He didn't even 'discover America'. It was discovered 500 years before he even set sail.
Columbus was involved in the slave trade of 9 and 10 year old girls.
Some of his soldiers have written accounts of him having over 3000 people slaughtered on one day.
Some of his own men committed suicide because they couldn't deal with serving under him and his sadistic regime.
Why the **** is this man celebrated?
It's no different than Germany having a praise Hitler day and EVERYONE joins in.
What the ****?
Wait, are you actually trying to compare Adolf Hitler, a Nazi dictator who was responsible for the Holocaust, World War 2 and the loss of German freedom? You have got to be kidding me. How could you even begin to make the comparison between the two? Hitler was one of the worst people to ever walk on the Earth. 3000 people were slaughtered per day? Source? Even then, Hitler was responsible for the deaths over 11 million people during the Holocaust. The Germans lost their rights to freedom, and again, millions were killed due to Hitler's quest to rule Europe (World War 2). The fact that you would even mention Columbus Day to a "praise Hitler Day" is ridiculous, idiotic and disrespectful.
To be fair on the whole "discovering America" thing, if it wasn't for the Europeans, all of us who live in developed countries outside of Europe and Southeast Asia would not have the same quality of life, freedom, education, opportunity and wealth that we do now. If it wasn't for the colonization of these countries by the Europeans, we would not be the same right now. Medicine, science, education, technology, etc. The way that you're living right now is because of colonization by the Europeans. Sure, some other European would have "found" America if Christopher Columbus didn't, but the world as a whole would be at a disadvantage if Christopher Columbus did not exist. Yes, Christopher Columbus (if what you are saying about him is true, a source of all this "information" would be helpful) is a horrible person. But, the things that happened as a result of his "discovery" of America is the reason why the holiday exists. Sure, Leif Ericson discovered the Americas first, but Christopher Columbus was the first to get lasting contact with the Americas.
Here's the thing about the Natives. If Christopher Columbus didn't discover America, eventually, the British would have "discovered" Canada. Now, we still treated the Natives horribly and drastically reduced their population. Not to the extent that the Americans did, but still. It was the colonization mentality, and it doesn't make it right, but Columbus wasn't even directly responsible for many of the deaths of the Natives anyways.

Jinx has got it spot on. This man was a terrible person and does not deserve to be celebrated.

Saying 'If someone didn't do something we wouldn't be where we are today.' doesn't make what they did right. You're saying this in hindsight, when at the time, he could have completely ruined the world for what it could have been.
If Hitler hadn't of caused war technological advances made because of war wouldn't have been made.
America could potentially still be in a depression dating back to 1929 if World War 2 didn't happen.
Does this make it right?
His sources for the 3000 people on ONE Day not 3000 people EVERY day are accounts written by Columbus' men.
Some of them became priests just so they didn't have to be a part of it all.

Lol @ people comparing Hitler.
Hitler wasn't even bad, I will never understand how people fail to acknowledge what really occurred. Though millions were murdered, and killed? Read about it somewhere other than a history book or online articles. Look into the DEEP WEB and read actual articles that haven't been fabricated or falsified. The only place you'll read the actual truth about this is in the deep web, where you risk your own safety for even visiting the sites. Recommendation: If you do take my advice, use a proxy or Tor so you don't leave any traces.
Half the things people read or talk about, about Hitler are entirely made up. Good luck with sending a public domain to someone and crediting it a "proper" source. Lol. Ignorant people. As for Columbus? The same reason we celebrate many other pointless events.

Because he was an imperialist.
At this point Europe was at it's imperialistic height.
As Vladimir Lenin said:
"Imperialism is the highest form of Capitalism."
America like to honor ambitious Capitalists.

I agree with this post. Also, @OP show photographical proof of your accusations and ill believe you, otherwise shut your mouth and stop spouting things that aren't 100% proven to be true.
