I want to upgrade my PCs processor. The issue is that it's an outdated socket, AM3. I DON'T want to spend over $80 which is why I've been shopping around on eBay. I currently have a 3-core Athlon 455. But I have come to the point where I need more power for rendering and editing. I wanted to up the ante to a 6-core Phenom 1055T which is also AM3. My question is, do any of you know of a better solution to my problem that'll keep me in the ~$80 budget?

You could pick up a Phenom II X4 or even an X2 555 and unlock the extra core if your board supports it. What board and cooler do you have? These CPUs overclock very well, too.

as root said the phenom II x4 is still a fairly good CPU and they do overclock really nice just make sure you can keep the heat on it down and you will be good,
