if you mean where it says "Free member" instead of "Gold member" it means you have no XBL

There is no way to be Gold member for free

To make a Free account :
1. Go To [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
2. Sign up
3. Go To Xbox.com
4. Click Sign up
5. Then Your a Free member ( No Xbox Live )

Microsoft stopped giving the free 1 month if that's what you are talking about. They stopped that a while ago. Now they give you and random gamer tag and let you change it once for free
