In looking at buying a new laptop tomorrow. What would be a good one to get? Not for gaming just things like browsing/downloading. For around 500. Thanks

Okay good. What precisely do you need it for? What sort of things will you be doing on it, other than the obvious ones, if you know what I mean.

Battery life - how good does it need to be?

Any preferred screen size? 15" / 13"?

Battery life not really an issue. Will be by power source most of time. Literally need it for browsing/downloading. Nothing special. I just want something that is quite fast and reliable.
Few people have told me Acer is the way to go. But I don't really know what I'm looking for when buying a laptop

Well I tend to steer away from these brands when buying a laptop, as I've had countless problems with them.

Acer
HP

So if you're downloading a lot, I'm assuming you're going to want to have a large HDD capacity.

Not sure if you like windows 8, but for the price this is a decent laptop. I saw it the other day, and thought it was a good deal.

The second is samsung. I'd say go with whichever you like the look of.

Samsung has more RAM and better Battery life, and also a minimally better CPU.

However, I prefer the looks of the Asus, and it's a hell of a lot lighter (1.5kg). It also has much better audio quality, which may not be too much of a deal, but for movies and stuff on the go it's quite handy.

Personal choice out of those two - Asus.

Edit -

This laptop is brilliant for the price -
