i am wanting to find info on if my Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M450 @2.40GHz is "Unlockable" i know you can unlock most of the newer intel CPU's to gain full access to them, but cant seem to find out if mine is applicable as well and how to do so with out buying intels special software to do so.

long story short apparently intel locks down the i7 after testing and sorting the best from the lower operating CPU's to i3,i5, and then sell's them and then offers a $50
cpu upgrade via software that unlocks the restricted i7 CPU that comes with lower end computers ie i3,i5....i dont mind spending a lil money on software but in this case i refuse seeing as i already paid for the hardware and see no reason why i should not have full access to it to begin with if i want it ;) .

also i noticed when i am in windows7, vitural box only shows 4 cpus 2 physical and 2 logical but when i boot into linux and use Vbox it show's 8 cpu's 4 physical and 4 logical ones, same goes for in task manager only finds 4 but linux sees 8,do you have any idea why it would do that with out having done any modifications? these are both on 64bit installs....

Vokal, what are you doing? Vokal, stahp!

You're asking if you can unlock cores in your current LAPTOP CPU? There is one simple answer, no. You can't unlock a locked CPU and you certainly can't unlock cores on a mobile CPU. Your CPU has 2 cores and 4 threads, nothing else!

As far as your tangeant about Vbox and Linux showing differing things I don't know what that's about, as I am familiar with neither.

I've heard of latent cores in desktop CPUs like the AMD Phenom II X2 555, but never in mobile CPUs. Intel denotes physical quad-core CPUs with a "Q" in the model number. I've also heard of this paid unlock option, but never actually seen it or which CPUs it applies to. I think it's stupid profiteering and Intel needs to spend some time in the [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] for it.

I have no idea why it would be detecting 8 logical cores, though, I just doubt you have latent cores in the first place.

thats what i thought a year ago as well and it may be the case in this instance, but i have helped with updating a friends bios on i3 mobile cpu to a i7 in the past and figured i should look into if it could be done on mine as well now that i have some free time.

thanks for the response, with adding latent to my cpu model in google i found that Intel is releasing a unlock app later this year "Processor Configuration update, in particular, i7-2630QM/i7-2635QM, i7-2670QM/i7-2675QM, i5-2430M/i5-2435M, i5-2410M/i5-2415M i5-520EM/i5-520M. Please contact OEM for the BIOS that includes the latest Processor configuration update". so i guess ill just wait and see what happens in the near future.they also have a AES acceleration patch for bios out now as well, though i dont know if that is what i am looking for.
