Sorry for the simple black and white writing, i normally take time in presenting my topics, but i need some help badly here:
I recently bought a second hand itouch 3rd gen 8gb and was wondering what was the best firmware to update it to?
I was thinking IOS 3 as that is the IOS it came out on i believe (correct me if i wrong) therefore performance wouldn't be as laggy, but the issue of that is not all the downloads would be available on cydia as they are all up to 5.1.1?

I dont think IOS 5 would be reasonable as it would be unbearably slow with that. ( my iphone 4s some times struggles with IOS 6 an thats only 1 IOS higher!)

Any suggestions would be appreciated, and +4 rep to the more justified reason, thanks

Your only choice is 5.1.1 or the highest firmware. Apple doesn't let you go to any firmware.

You can downlaod firmare from the internet then in itunes press ctrl-f i think and then select the firmware you downloaded. done!

this will not downgrade firmware just upgrade.

Apple doesn't allow that. He can try though.

I would just update it to 5.1.1 and jailbreak.
Most likely why your iPhone 4s is struggling is something is worng with your iphone. I
still have a 4s that I use for work and it runs perfectly. i use my iphone 5 for personal use.
