If time travel ever existed we would have gone back in time and we would have been so technologically advanced from the start of life and we would know everything because whenever something new was discovered we would go back in time and invent it so that the people after it could "live longer" and discover more things when in reality they are just having more background knowledge from the start

That wouldn't be a smart idea. Going back and altering the natural course could have some bad effects. I'm assuming only a small number of people would be able to time travel. Going back and building tech not of that period is bad because the people of that time wouldn't know the consequences of using them. Germans had some nice tech, but you see what they were doing with it. People are war happy and greedy. We would destroy ourselves with tech we know little about. Also, there is a chance that if time travel were to be real, it could either send you to a different universe of a different time or creates a new universe entirely in a different time. Just some extra theories on that.

I would assume the butterfly effect would have some sort of impact on this.

The butter fly effect refers to the thought that a mosquito's wings flapping in the Amazon effect the wind speed in Texas.

Surely changing something minuscule could have huge effects on the future.

forward time travel is basically a scientific fact, backwards time travel however is impossible

I think we're just smart enough to not try and time travel into the past because we know that could really **** things up. That's why no one has come from the future.

Time travelling backwards i don't believe will ever be possible, but forwards yes, as multiple theories claim the can do it, it is just obviously extremely hard.
