Is it possible to move all my program files to an external hard drive as I need to upgrade it soon.

If you do this, it'll work:
1) Copy them to the external hard drive
2) Upgraded your computer
3) Moved them all back to your C:\ drive
Otherwise, they wont be able to run off your external hard drive unless you've installed them there originally.
