It is because of the mass amount of people trying to access the cydia servers, it happens almost every time when an untethered is released. Give it 48-72 hours and it should be back to normal.

am hoping it will be because i keep on getting a red error when i try to download something

We all have, you just have to be patient. The same happened with iOS 5 untethered and possibly iOS 4 untethered, I didn't jailbreak until iOS 4.3.5 I think it was.

This was happening to me and then I shut down my iPod then turned it back on the problem was fixed

With the recent release of Evasi0n 1.0 for iOS6, literally hundreds of thousands of people are slamming the Cydia servers and repos right now, trying to get all their favorite jailbreak tweaks installed. Unfortunately, all this congestion means that it is going to be more-or-less impossible for anyone to install anything for the next few hours. No matter what you try to install, you will likely be met with a red error in Cydia along the lines of "NetDB: Open nodename nor servname provided, or not known." "HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error" or "POSIX: Operation timed out"

ive give up trying now going to leave it till tomorrow

It's because the massive amount of traffic going into Cydia's servers. Once they upgrade or find a way to handle the traffic, it will be back up. Or until it calms down.
