Hey Guys just feel like making a lucid dreaming topic because i myself have been going at this for a while and i find it very interesting. I've only had 2 LD's myself but i know they are really cool and have alot of potential!
Here are some tips and techniques you guys can use!
What is a lucid dream?
A lucid dream is a dream in which you know you are dreaming. Simple
Techniques
The MILD technique
This stands for Mnemonic Induction Lucid Dream. This technique is extremely effective, although it can be difficult to focus upon since it's practiced while falling asleep. The basics are: Before going to bed, use the autosuggestion method for promoting good dream recall and the occurrence of lucid dreams, and then (ideally) use the following technique on a previous night's dream: When you awaken after any REM period, arouse yourself and recall as many dreams as possible using the dream recall methods. Before returning to sleep (while sitting on the side of your bed is best so as not to doze off before finishing the technique), tell yourself "The next time I'm dreaming, I want to remember that I'm dreaming", then imagine you are back in the dream from which you just awoke, remembering it step by step, scene by scene, except that this time you see yourself recognizing that you're dreaming (ideally when something odd occurs) and carrying out some planned activity (see below). Then lay down, and focus upon your intention followed by the visualization as many times as you can until you fall asleep.
The WBTB Technique
This stands for Wake Back to Bed. Apply this technique upon awakening (preferably from REM-sleep awakening) but at least 1 hour before your normal wake up time. Aim is to interrupt morning sleep with a period of about 30 to 90 minutes of wakefulness, rehearsing your lucid dream and dreamsign recognition, to then return to sleep while visualizing yourself becoming lucid in the last dream you can remember. Learn how to master the WBTB technique.
The DILD Technique
This stands for Dream Induced Lucid Dream. This is one of the most common ways people attain lucidity. Usually if people have fortuitous lucid dreams, they are DILDs. It merely means that the dreamer becomes aware that they are dreaming, whilst still being in the dream. DILD (and WILD) are more of categories, in which other techniques are used to attain lucidity in the specified manner. DILD's aren't as "reliable" as WILD's though, because you don't enter them consciously, making them happen more sporadically, (though they take up less time, and can be reliable if given enough patience, plus, they're easier) but with practice you can easily gain lucidity via DILD, with sundry techniques. Learning to become skeptical of your surrounds, learning your dream signs, being confident (not stressing out) etc. Are great ways to get started.
The WILD Technique
This stands for Wake Initiated Lucid dreams technique. Apply this technique only upon awakening from REM-sleep. Aim is to fall asleep while keeping lucid and entering a dream directly without losing the state of lucidity throughout the process. Needless to say, this is one of the most challenging lucid dream induction techniques around. Also the most rewarding, because while falling asleep consciously you will vividly experiences all kinds of wonderful hypnogogic hallucinations before the dream fully materializes.
Tips To Help Induce Lucid Dreams
Reality Checks: RC's are probably one of the biggest aids in attaining Lucidity. If you get in the habit of them, your odds of having a lucid dream increase greatly. When you reality check, you want to take time when doing it. Some of the more common RCs are plugging the nose and trying to breathe, trying to pull your finger to see if it will stretch, checking clocks, and other things such as that. In general, awareness is a reality check itself. Try to notice if people are acting funny, observe your surrounding as often as you can. If something odd happens, do a reality check. Just make sure you don't do these with little awareness, don't make doing them a blind habit. truly question if you're dreaming.
Dream Signs: Dream Signs are things that often occur in your dreams. Whether it be a person, a place, an object, a feeling, or anything else. If you use a dream journal, you can read through it and maybe notice patterns. If you become aware of these reoccurring themes in your dreams, it can help you become more aware of them. If possible, anytime you see this thing (place, person, experiencing a feeling, object, etc.) do a reality. This will help pass it into your dreams because you are gaining awareness when it occurs, therefore helping you become lucid.
Stay present as you drift asleep: As you lie ready for sleep, especially after waking during the night, focus upon your breath and simply observe any thoughts that arise, without getting caught by them. If you do, and later "snap back", focus right back on your breath.
Meditating: Meditating can help with all around life, but can also help when it comes to lucid dreaming. Meditate and focus on the thought of becoming aware. In dreams, or daily life. Meditate on dreams in general. You can do this anytime, before bed can be especially helpful. But also, just clearing your mind before sleep could aid in becoming lucid.
Develop dream recall: Put a pad of paper next to your bed and record your dream immediately upon waking. Immediately means immediately. If you get dressed first, or even stare at the ceiling for a minute, dream recollection will be nil. Expect that you might not get more than a few lines for the first week or so, but also expect to get to multi-page recall ability within 2-3 weeks. This alone will make you look forward to going to bed and helps in gaining lucidity and will make dreams more vivid over time.
Dream Incubating: Dream incubating is sort of like visualizing and mild combined. You want to implant a certain thought or idea in your dream. Imagine a certain situation, that is not to complicated, where you do a reality check and gain lucidity. Maybe act out what you would do if you were actually in the dream. Just keep doing this over and over again. When you are laying in bed before sleep, anytime you wake up in the night or during a WBTB. Notice details, and act as if you actually are becoming lucid. Alternatively, you can do this, but visualize a certain event, it doesn't necessarily have to involve you becoming lucid. This will help if you want to dream about something specific.
