The ignorance and stupidity in this thread is outstanding.

"True clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for weeks or longer."

"A major depressive disorder usually just called depression is different than the blues. Someone experiencing depression is grappling with feelings of severe despair over an extended period of time. Almost every aspect of their life can be affected, including their emotions, physical health, relationships and work. For people with depression, it does not feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel there is just a long, dark tunnel."

"But the normal experiences of life shouldn't be confused with the serious medical illnesses known as mood disorders. There are different kinds of depressive mood disorders, including bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), post-partum depression and psychosis, but clinical depression, or "unipolar disorder" is the most common depressive disorder.

Mood disorders are very real illnesses that can have serious and sometimes fatal results. They affect the entire body and not just the mind. Their physical symptoms can range from fatigue to stomach complaints or muscle and joint pain. Many people never realize that they are suffering from depression."

"Depression is more than simply feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days.
We all go through spells of feeling down, but when you're depressed you feel persistently sad for weeks or months, rather than just a few days.
Some people still think that depression is trivial and not a genuine health condition. They're wrong. Depression is a real illness with real symptoms, and it's not a sign of weakness or something you can "snap out of" by "pulling yourself together"."

It is ignorant for anyone to deny the existence of depression, the thread really makes me loose hope in the world. I have had clinical depression for 3 years now, and if you say its fake, I honestly believe you should jump off a cliff. Maybe then you would feel some of the pain people with such a emotional disorder go through. Do a simple google about depression, or even better, some of the theories behind mental disorders such as one having a "chemical imbalance".

One can't be stupid for beveling in an emotional disorder that is recognized by every single medical institution in the world. Are you even a NP? If so, god, I would surely hope you weren't my doctor.

and you aren't stating an opinion, your stating pure stupidity.

Enemy sob story incoming!

I was diagnosed with depression back when I was 15. As well as anxiety disorder. Why? I was being mentally and emotionally abused by my step father. (Yes, you can get depression from abuse, look it up.) I was never put on medication. I've still never been put on medication. It makes it worse everyday. Sure, people tell me to just get over it. But it's something that's hard to move on from. I cannot cure my depression by just saying "You know what? I've been seeking attention for too long because I was a little b****h and never stood up for myself, wait, I did and things got worse, oh well, more attention seeking." What do you want me to do, sir? I'm a broken individual and I'm not going to be fixed. Even if I was fixed, the cracks would still be there. Depression is very real, and it's no laughing matter. Maybe since you don't understand it, learn to. My boyfriend also has depression, you wouldn't believe it. He's a happy person. You don't always have to be sad to be depressed. Also, you aren't giving much explanation behind why you believe it's fake, besides people use it for attention, you know obviously like myself. Tell us why exactly you think it's fake. You know, ignore the solid facts of it being real and all.

TL;DR: I like attention because I have depression.*

*everytime I said this line, I was being sarcastic.

Not, really. I get depressed quite often and everyone else gets on with their life and I don't get any attention.

-Chicago wrote I don't really believe in depression and I don't believe it's a disorder it's just people who can't get over themselves what do you think

You will believe in depression when someone close to you dies, you get fired... or simply when your at a stage when you are not enjoying life, and are pretty miserable.
Depression happens to everybody, just because you've been sailing along happily with no worries doesn't mean you wont be depressed in the future and you can declare it fake and a product of people who wont get over themselves.
