This good sir is correct. I believe there is Bukkit, and Vanilla. Those are the only two i know of. I have both, one Whitelisted Vanilla, and a Whitelisted Bukkit

vanilla - made by the minecraft team, the official server, can't add anything though
bukkit - made by some external developers, allows you to add ranks and install plugins

I believe there are a few other types like canarie
^ however, the only ones people really use are bukkit and vanilla

then hit "Minecraft_server.jar"
Download it
make a folder called "Server"
Place it in there.
Run "Minecraft_server.jar"
once it says "Generating spawn" wait till it says Done.
Then go to server.properties then change "server-ip=" and "port=" to what ever your IP/ Port is.
Get hamachi and put your IPV4 ip/port in there.
Then give your friends the user and pass for hamachi and tell them to join the server!
walla!
