Do it on the forums so everyone can see it. It's better not to have just one person giving advice.

OP, by the time you build, there's a good chance what anyone recommends now will be out of date. For under $1500, you could have the works, which currently looks something like this:

i5-3570K
Mid-range Z77 motherboard
Non-reference 7970
~$100 case
High-end air cooling (much better choice than sealed water coolers)
128GB SSD
1TB HDD
8/16GB RAM
Quality 650w PSU

r00t Knows what's up. hah.
I myself have priced out my own $1500 build including all the stuff he has listed

+ an after market CPU fan ($40) and a power supply ($170ish).

my build is priced at I think $1460.. All my parts are coming from newegg except for the case and 7980 graphics card.

Case is coming from ebay, and the card is coming from amazon

Currently, an $80 PSU at 650w (Rosewill HIVE-650) will be more than adequate for a 7970 build with overvolting and overclocking. If you paid $170 for the PSU for a build like this, you paid way too much.

I have not purchased any components yet. So it's good this is being brought up. I was recommended by a friend to go with an 850Watt corsair.. Is that more than I need?

get the 750w modular. You have no need for 850. the 750 is what i used on my $2000 build and i loved it

Yeah, he's wrong and that's way too much. It's typical of people who don't know much about PSUs to blindly recommend Corsair and overshoot the ideal wattage by hundreds of watts. What card are you looking at? 550w is perfect for most sweet-spot cards, but ~650w would be better for a 7970 due to the amount of power it can consume when overvolted and overclocked.

Still too much.

For which the Rosewill HIVE-650 would be perfect.
