Today I will be teaching you how to hotswap with a PHAT xbox 360. I believe this does not work with slim xbox 360's so please do not try this with your slim xbox 360 as you may risk damaging it.

Wilez wrote This does work with the slim.
It's just more complicated to take apart a slim.
Also, you press install, and wait for it to bring up the storage device selector before switching discs.

First things first, you have to open your xbox 360. If you do not feel safe doing so, then please do not open your xbox 360. Once you have your xbox 360 open to the point that you can see the actual mother board of the system, it's time to take the top off of your disc drive (There are 4 screws at each corner of the drive and they are star headed and small. If you used a screw driver to take your xbox apart that screwdriver should be ok for the screws on your disc drive.) Once you have completed taking the top off of the disc drive, you will have to take the sticker off of the top of your disc drive (the bit that you took of with the screw drivers should have a sticker on it) Once you've taken that sticker off you will see a silver, metal piece. To remove this you must hold the metal piece and twist the black piece at the bottom (im not sure if it's left or right, i forgot. Just try both ways). There is a magnet between the two and once you've taken them apart put them back together but not over the actual disc drive cover. The magnet should go in between the two pieces, black bit at the bottom and silver bit at the top. To get them back together simply twist them the opposite way you did to get them apart.

Preparation is done. Now you have to put the original disc of the game you wish to hotswap inside the disc drive and put the assembled piece that holds the game onto the disc drive onto the actual disc drive, over the middle of the game. Turn on the xbox and it starts to spin up. (Don't get scared, it wont fly off and take your head off). Once it has loaded up, hover over your game on the dashboard, press Y, and hover over install. Make sure your harddrive device is in the xbox at this point.

Now, for the hard part(i recommend having a friend or someone to help you with this, as i dont think the average person has 4 arms) Take this in two easy steps:
-Have the backup disc ready(either you hold it or your friend does)
-Quickly stop the disc from spinning, take the piece that holds it on off, take the original disc out, put the backup disc in and put the piece that holds it all together back in the middle of the disc to hold it onto the disc drive.

If you have completed this process without cutting your fingers off (joke), then just simply hit install, pick where you want to save it to and then it will begin installing to your HDD.

Congratulations, you have just hotswapped. Hope my tutorial helped, i know it's a lot of typing but for some it's easy to understand in text rather than video.

Hope i helped anyone who was struggling or did simply not have a clue on how to hotswap

Comment if you have any suggestions on what to add to this tutorial!

I feel like this is a dumb question, but I really don't know and I can't find an answer...

You can still play like normal on a hotswapped console, correct? I have a Xbox Arcade from 2006 (The first type made) and I'm wondering if I hotswap, will I still be able to play all other games like normal?

Yes you will. Hotswapping is just installing modded contents to the harddrive when it think's its installing the actual legit game.

He means the ridges on the screws are worn off. Meaning, turning it does nothing, the screw is basically smooth which makes it near impossible to get out.

It's literally impossible to hotswap without opening the xbox. Also, as i said, it doesnt work with slim open or not.

Oh. In that case i'd recommend taking a power drill with a small long drill bit on it and gently drill through the screw.
