I'm suprised nobody mentioned the best editor around. I'm using Sublime Text 2, it's free to use but you can also buy it. Sublime text 2 has a massive community, with lots of usefull plugins that can be installed within seconds and without even leaving your editor.

Just watch these videos about the features in Sublime Text 2, and you will understand:

Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 Ultimate
Eclipse
IntelliJ
NetBeans

I also use Notepad++ for certain scripting languages as I love the UI.

Well, you can use a text editor (notepad, notepad++, sublime text) or you can use an IDE (IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, Netbeans). IDE are Integrated Development Enviorments and they are pretty much text editors with a whole bunch of tools to make programming a lot faster and easier. My preferred IDE is eclipse and text editor, sublime text.

Notepad isn't a proper IDE.
